I love my new Pentel Brush Pen!

This pen works wonders. Amazing thick and think lines. Like REALLY thin! When I use it for sketching, I can barely feel it touching the paper....it's almost like I'm flying when I draw with it. These drawings are more finished but the one with the boy was the first drawing I ever did with it. I love this pen.

Here's some sketches I did for the caricature on the previous post. The guy likes to cook so that was the theme for the artwork. The order goes from bottom to top.

2010 IT'S GO TIME

So this is my first 2010 entry. I haven't posted jack squat I know. 2010, the year of the blog. Postings at LEAST once a week. That ads up to 4 postings a month, 48 postings in one year. Ok, I'll try to post more than once. It's go time. Stay tuned. To start it off, here's a custom caricature I did for a friend's brother for Christmas. I'll post the sketches at a later date. -Ricky

Dancin' Fool

I went to a friend's wedding this past weekend. I danced for the first time in public. It was fun. At first it was intimidating and embarrassing but then I just let loose and stopped caring. Though half the time I didn't even know what I was doing....I just knew my body was moving with the music.....whether it was actually "dancing", probably a good 40% of it was :D

Color Test

This is just a little color test for my short film, "Vroom." My original intent was not to have it colored, but I did this for fun and I couldn't help but liking it alot. It really gives it a more 'finished' feel and look. Problem is that I stink at color, so I it would be another monster to battle along with the rest of the production. My friend Misty Marsden is excellent at color.....hmmm perhaps I should ask her to color style my film?

Caricatures!

I love drawing caricatures. Those who know me will know I love Al Hirschfeld's work, so you can see his influence. Well in essence, I love all the great caricature artists of the early 2oth century, like Miguel Cavarrubias(think I spelled it right). Amazing, simple, abstract, and bold drawings that I don't see alot today in caricature art. Well, every now and then I see something.

These pieces were taken right from my sketchbook, some I didn't even have to modify or improve cause they were mostly extremely quick sketches of people, so I had to get down that person's traits and essence with a few lines as possible. I love doing quick caricatures cause, for one thing, they're fun, and helps with observation. I had fun adding color to these. And there's more to come! PS-These were drawn in colerase blue, then hand inked with a quill pen on watercolor paper.

Yosemite Comic

So I'm on my first real comic! It's gonna be in watercolor and ink. I'm illustrating an experience I had with some friends at Yosemite, so I'm excited.

Right now I've been doing concept art deciding whether to illustrate it all ink and watercolor or just the characters with ink. I decided on the latter, to help bring the characters out.















































































These ones were more abstract which I really love. It's so moody and atmospheric. Yosemite has a lot of that. I'm going to try to do the backgrounds like this.

Thanks to Nat Fast and his creative illustration class or this project would not be happening. He showed me some awesome watercolor techniques that blew my mind!

My Dad

I love drawing caricatures! My dad hates being drawn or photographed. I don't know why, but I think he's fun to draw, or else I would not have done this little number. Sorry it's a bit cut off, my scanner is to darn small. :/
