Thank you, Pops.

Caricature of my Pops :)  c. 2008

One summer, before my fourth year at CalArts, my Dad spurred me to try drawing caricatures at the swap meet in my hometown, as a way to have a summer job instead of something more conventional like delivering pizzas. I was actually really skeptical at first, thinking that no one would want to buy drawings. People want to save money at the swap meet, not spend it on art! Plus, I'd never drawn in public like that and was really nervous how the public would react to my drawings of them. I gave it a shot, and my Dad helped me set up my booth, with my younger brother as my cashier lol. It was a huge success that first day, and I had a lot of fun. I wouldn't be running around L.A drawing caricatures today if it weren't for my Dad. He believed in me when I didn't. Every time someone asks me how I got started doing live caricatures as a means to make a living, I recount this story. Gracias Pops, and Happy Father's Day! :)

Live Caricatures at Food Truck Festival.

This Saturday,  I will be drawing Live Caricatures at this Food Truck Festival, in Perris, Ca. There's gonna be 14 of the best gourmet food trucks and a beer garden. Hmmm, sounds tasty. Too bad I'll be busy drawing, I don't think I'll get to try anything :(    Well, if you're looking for something to do on Saturday, come on out. You can purchase tickets here.http://fathersdayfoodtruckfest.eventbrite.com/

Random stop at the Pet Store.

I stumbled upon a pet shop, and the critters inspired me to draw.

These guys had the most beautiful mix of colors, and way brighter than my renderings.

Frantic little guys. The first one from the middle was trying to sleep. The second one in the middle was hurt me thinks.

Chillin.'

Beautiful young dog, very friendly. He looked like a golden retriever.

"Will you adopt me?"

Caricatures for Project Angel Food

Last week I drew caricatures at an art auction for Project Angel Food, where all the proceeds went to support Project Angel Food's mission to "nourish the body and spirit of men, women, and children affected by HIV/AIDS, Cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses." It was a fun night and busy night!

I think this guy could be in the next Bond movie!

James Garner?

Simon Cowell?! I thought it was too, he even had a British accent!

Illustrator icons.

Been taking some Adobe Illustrator tutorials online to sharpen up on new skills. I've used Illustrator for about 9 years now, but I'm always discovering new skills and things I never knew how to do before. These little guys down here are inspired by iPhone app icons. The source of inspiration? Uh, just the most awesome combination in the world! :)

A little homage to Pixar's motto: "Story is King."

I just got a new(well, my first) Cintiq, the small one, and this is my friend Misty who sold it to me. This was my first drawing on it. I'm super excited to use it as the difference between the Cintiq and a Wacom tablet is enormous! I have more control accuracy of my lines on the Cintiq and feels like I'm actually drawing. Sorry ol' Wacom tablet, after 8 years, it's bout' time we evolved :)

Late Night Painting Sesh.

This was inspired by my sketch of Yosemite Falls down below, but also the location itself. The colors there are absolutely dazzling.

Paintin' in Painter.

Original sketch done on location.
